If you’ve ever dreamed of exchanging vows on the rugged cliffs of the North Shore, a Split Rock Lighthouse micro-wedding might be exactly what you’re envisioning. This day was intimate, emotional, and full of the natural beauty that makes Minnesota weddings feel so magical. Split Rock is one of my favorite places to photograph because it combines dramatic cliffs, pine trees, and endless Lake Superior views, all creating the perfect backdrop for a meaningful, no-frills celebration. This wedding was simple, heartfelt, and the kind of day that reminds you what really matters.

If you’re imagining a day that’s intimate, meaningful, and connected to nature, Split Rock Lighthouse checks every box.
Couples love it because:
It’s a location that lets the moment stay the focus.
Beth & Troy’s micro-wedding was the perfect blend of calm and joyful. The couple arrived on a party bus surrounded by their closest 20 people, keeping the day simple and true to who they are. The North Shore had that classic mix of soft cloud cover and warm light, making every corner of the landscape look cinematic. These two traveled from North Dakota as the north shore has always been a special place in their hearts. It felt fitting for them to say “I do” along the shore.
They shared laughs, took their time getting ready, and truly soaked in the beauty of the place. Nothing felt rushed, which is one of the most beautiful parts of choosing an intimate wedding day. You have all the time to soak in every little moment, and enjoy it without feeling rushed.

The ceremony took place overlooking Lake Superior with the lighthouse perched above, one of the most iconic views in Minnesota.
It was emotional, heartfelt, and completely present. The simplicity of having just their loved ones around allowed everyone to be in the moment. You could feel the joy and support surrounding them as they exchanged their vows with the waves crashing below.

After the ceremony, we wandered along the cliffs and trails for portraits. This is always my favorite part of photographing weddings at Split Rock.
We explored:
The combination of wind, water, and rugged rock created movement-filled, natural, emotional images. Lake Superior never disappoints.

Warm. Calm. Intentional.
This wedding felt like one long exhale, a reminder that small, meaningful celebrations are just as impactful as big weddings (if not more). The couple was relaxed and fully present, and everyone around them mirrored that same energy.
The whole day felt like the North Shore itself: grounded, peaceful, and beautifully real.

Weekdays offer fewer crowds and more privacy.
Lake Superior weather is often times unpredictable, embrace it! It photographs beautifully.
There can be multiple photo spots, each worth exploring! It truly depends on your vision and what you’d like photographed within this space.
Some areas require special use permits depending on group size. You can find more information about permits here, as they will need to be obtained through the Minnesota Historical Society for Split Rock Lighthouse specifically.
Cliffs + rocks + uneven ground = prioritize safety! Bring a pair of shoes that you can wear while walking to different locations if needed, and throw the heels on when you get to your destination.
Even on warm days, the breeze can cool quickly. A light jacket or flannel (something you can throw on and off) is perfect.
As someone who grew up surrounded by pine trees and Lake Superior views, photographing weddings here feels like home. The landscape has a way of grounding people, helping them slow down, breathe, and really feel the weight of their commitment.
There’s nothing quite like the combination of emotion + scenery that the North Shore gives.

If Split Rock Lighthouse is calling your name, I’d love to help you plan and document your day. Whether you want something adventurous and rugged or calm and intimate, this location offers endless possibilities.
