Engagement Sessions

December 10, 2025

If you’re dreaming of an engagement session surrounded by waterfalls, pine trees, and the rugged beauty of the North Shore, Gooseberry Falls State Park is one of the most perfect places you can choose. As a Minnesota engagement photographer, I love photographing couples here because it offers so much variety: rushing falls, calm forest trails, rocky shoreline views, and hidden pockets of quiet that feel incredibly romantic. This Gooseberry Falls engagement session was full of natural movement, genuine connection, and the kind of scenic backdrops that make the North Shore unforgettable.

Why Gooseberry Falls Is Perfect for Engagement Photos

Gooseberry Falls has a little bit of everything. You can start at the iconic waterfalls and then wander into quiet, wooded trails before ending near the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior. The ability to get multiple backdrops in one location makes your gallery feel full, dynamic, and beautifully varied.

Here’s why couples love it:

  • multiple waterfalls + overlooks
  • gorgeous pine forest light
  • scenic bridges + textured rock
  • easy trails for movement-filled photos
  • the option to end near Lake Superior for sunset

It truly feels like a mini adventure without needing to hike miles!

The Best Spots for Photos Inside the Park

Lower Falls

Soft, even lighting + dramatic water movement = perfect for close, intimate shots.

Middle Falls Bridge

A great vantage point for wide, scenic photos and playful walking prompts.

Forest Trail Loop

Dreamy pine trees, filtered light, and a quiet place to slow down between locations.

Lake Superior Shoreline

Just a short walk away, offering cliffs, rocks, and open sky views.

You can build a full session without ever feeling rushed.

What This Engagement Session Felt Like

This engagement session with Shelby and Miles was relaxed, so much fun, and full of natural movement. We wandered the trails, paused to take in the waterfalls, and let the evening unfold at its own pace. We were able to go at a time where the water level was very low, which allowed us to adventure closer to the middle falls and get some really great photos with the falls as a close backdrop!

The connection between these two made the photos feel effortless. Lots of laughing, exploring, getting splashed by a little waterfall mist, and ending with soft golden light near the lake.

It felt like one of those summer evenings that remind you why the North Shore is such a special place to choose for your engagement photos.

What to Wear for a Gooseberry Falls Engagement Session

Because Gooseberry Falls includes forest shade, water spray, and open sky, layering and neutral tones work beautifully here.

Some tips:

  • choose earthy tones (tan, olive, cream, denim blue)
  • avoid neon colors or large logos (they distract from the scenery)
  • bring comfortable footwear — trails can be damp and uneven!
  • flowy outfits look gorgeous near the falls + lake breeze

If you want two outfits, I recommend:

  • one casual look for the forest/waterfall area
  • one dressier look for the shoreline near sunset

And if you don’t normally wear dresses, skip the dress! Wear something that feels like you, and something you feel good in.

Tips for Planning Your Engagement Photos Here

Go during golden hour

The sunlight filtering through the trees or hitting the rocks near the lake is literal magic. Of course, any time of day would be beautiful at Gooseberry Falls, but golden hour just really hits different.

Avoid peak crowds

Evenings and weekdays offer the most privacy. Weekends during the summer months can be very, very crowded. Shooting for a time around meals (like dinner time during the summer months) may give us more time to the park without the larger crowds.

Expect some walking + uneven ground

Waterfall areas can be slippery and uneven. If the water is low, we will be able to adventure closer to the falls. This is has a lot of uneven ground from the water flowing over it throughout the years. Wear shoes that will be comfortable to navigate the uneven terrain in, and if you’d like to wear heels or other types of shoes – pack them with and you can pop them on when you get to the final location.

Bring a light layer

Lake Superior often keeps the area cool, even in the summer months. Bringing a light jacket or flannel just to have when you need to warm up is never a bad idea!

Make it an adventure date

Bring snacks, explore the trails together, or plan dinner in Two Harbors or Beaver Bay after your session! Some really great places I’d recommend include Betty’s Pies (I worked here in high school!!), Rustic Inn Cafe, or Cove Point Crossing.

Why I Love Shooting Engagement Sessions on the North Shore

There’s something grounding about being surrounded by water, pines, and the sound of the falls.
The North Shore brings out a different energy in people. Couples naturally relax, breathe deeper, and enjoy the moment.

As someone who grew up along the North Shore of Minnesota and feels deeply connected to this landscape, photographing couples here always feels special. There’s nothing forced, just capturing the honest, meaningful connection between you and your partner in a place that truly feels alive.
