What to Wear for Your North Shore Engagement Photos

Engagement Sessions, Photo Session Tips & Resources

December 10, 2025

As a Minnesota engagement photographer, the question I’m asked most often is: “What should we wear for our engagement photos?” With the North Shore’s cliffs, pines, and Lake Superior as your backdrop, choosing the right outfits can make your photos feel even more timeless, natural, and true to your story. This guide breaks down simple, stress-free styling tips, plus a full-season breakdown, so your outfits not only look great but also feel comfortable enough for exploring the rugged, beautiful landscapes of Northern Minnesota.

Choose Outfits That Feel Like You

Your engagement photos should represent you. The best images happen when you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing, not like you’re trying to fit into a style that doesn’t feel natural.

If you don’t typically wear dresses, there’s no pressure to wear one just because you’ve seen them in inspiration photos. Wear something that feels true to your everyday style. When you feel like yourself, it shows instantly in your photos and helps the entire session feel relaxed and genuine.

Stick to Neutral, Earthy Tones

The North Shore’s color palette is full of cool blues, evergreens, rocky tones, and warm neutrals, so choosing earthy, subtle colors helps your outfits blend beautifully with the landscape year-round.

Think shades like cream, tan, olive, black, denim blue, and soft muted colors. These tones complement the cliffs and lake in summer, pair perfectly with fall foliage, stand out softly against winter snow, and harmonize with the early spring greenery.

Choosing season-appropriate neutrals not only photographs beautifully but also helps keep the focus on you instead of the outfit.

Coordinate — Don’t Match

Choose outfits that complement each other without being identical.
Example:

  • She wears a cream knit sweater
  • He wears a brown jacket + dark denim

Cohesive, but not too matchy-matchy.

Think About Movement + Location

North Shore sessions often involve walking, sitting on cliffs, or exploring trails. Choose pieces that allow easy movement — flowy dresses, comfortable jeans, and tops that won’t restrict your arms.

Bring Layers for the North Shore Weather

Even in July, Lake Superior has a mind of its own.
Layers give you:

  • warmth
  • variety in your gallery
  • cozy, natural movement

Bring jackets, sweaters, or flannels you can add or remove throughout the session. This can be so useful on those windy days up the shore that have a crisp air to them. Being able to add or remove as we move along can be so helpful during your session!

Choose Textures Over Patterns

Textures (knits, linen, denim, wool) photograph beautifully.
If you do choose patterns, keep them subtle — small plaid or soft floral. Although some patterns look amazing with photographing, it can sometimes be distracting, and sometimes – you can’t see the pattern. I totally leave this up to my couples on what types of patterns they like, especially if a certain pattern (like flannels ☺️) are a key piece to your relationship.

Bring a Second Outfit (If You Want!)

Having two outfits can add more variety to your gallery and give your photos a nice mix of looks. Most couples bring:

  • one casual option
  • one dressier option

A long flowy dress is always beautiful with the lake breeze, but it’s never required. If dresses aren’t your thing, skip it — you can still create a dressier look with nicer tops, sweaters, jackets, or tailored pieces. What matters most is that both outfits feel true to your style and comfortable enough to move around in.

Footwear Matters

We’ll likely walk on rocks, sand, or uneven terrain.
Best options:

  • boots
  • strapped sandals
  • clean sneakers
  • wedges (if stable)

You can totally bring heels, but my recommendation would be to bring a pair of shoes that you can step into while we walk to our location. Something that will be easier to walk in on the terrain (like tennis shoes!). Trust me, I’ve been there walking in platform sandals and heels for my own engagement session up the shore and it was hard. Once you get to your final location, switch into those heels!

Seasonal Outfit Ideas for North Shore Engagement Photos

Because the Minnesota North Shore looks completely different each season, here’s how to dress comfortably and beautifully year-round.

SPRING OUTFIT IDEAS (April–May)

Spring brings cooler temps, soft colors, and sometimes muddy trails.

Colors that look great in spring:
sage, cream, light tan, denim blue, muted pastels

Outfit ideas:

  • Flowy dresses with denim jackets
  • Light sweaters + jeans
  • Neutral long-sleeve tops
  • Boots or waterproof sneakers for muddy areas
  • Lightweight shacket for warmth

Avoid:
anything too thin — early spring can still feel like winter near the lake.

SUMMER OUTFIT IDEAS (June–August)

Summer is warm, bright, and perfect for cliffs, beaches, and forest trails.

Colors that work well:
cream, tan, olive, muted blues, warm browns, soft patterns

Outfit ideas:

  • Long flowy dress (always stunning with the breeze)
  • Linen tops + shorts or jeans
  • Button-ups layered over tanks
  • Sandals or breathable shoes
  • Light cardigans for sunset chill

Avoid:
neon colors — they reflect onto your skin.

FALL OUTFIT IDEAS (September–October)

Fall on the North Shore is iconic — warm foliage tones, textured outfits, cozy layers.

Colors that look perfect:
rust, caramel, mustard, cream, forest green, charcoal

Outfit ideas:

  • Sweaters + jeans
  • Flannels layered with jackets
  • Knit dresses + boots
  • Corduroy textures
  • Warm neutral scarves (optional)

Avoid:
competing with the bright fall colors — keep your tones earthy.

WINTER OUTFIT IDEAS (November–March)

Winter sessions are magical — cozy, moody, and beautifully quiet.

Colors that photograph beautifully in winter:
cream, black, brown, camel, deep green, charcoal

Outfit ideas:

  • Long wool coats
  • Chunky knit sweaters
  • Scarves and beanies (simple, not busy patterns)
  • Boots with good traction
  • Neutral layers for warmth

Avoid:
bright red or bright blue jackets unless you want a pop of color — neutrals are more timeless.

Final Thoughts: Keep It Comfortable + True to You!

The best engagement photos happen when you’re comfortable, relaxed, and wearing something that feels like you. Choose outfits that let you move, explore, laugh, and be fully present together.
