Black Beach in Silver Bay, Minnesota is one of the most unique places to elope along the North Shore. The dark shoreline. The blue water. The cliffs surrounding the beach. It looks completely different than anywhere else in Minnesota. And honestly… it photographs beautifully.
But here’s the thing most people don’t realize:
Black Beach isn’t the perfect elopement location.
And depending on your vision, it might actually not be the right fit at all.
Before you choose Black Beach for your elopement, here’s what I think couples should actually know.
If you’re still early in the planning process, you can also read my How to Elope Along Lake Superior guide, where I walk through locations, timing, and what to expect when planning an elopement on the North Shore.

First, there’s a reason people are drawn to it.
Black Beach is incredibly unique. The dark shoreline gives photos a completely different look than the typical North Shore beaches. It feels dramatic, bold, and a little more moody.
It’s also:
If you’re envisioning something simple, relaxed, and visually different, Black Beach can absolutely work.
It’s especially great for:
But this is where things start to shift.
Black Beach is popular. Really popular.
Because it’s so easy to access and visually unique, it tends to draw a lot of visitors, especially on the weekends in the summer and fall. It’s not uncommon to have:
If you’re imagining a quiet, secluded elopement, Black Beach might not give you that experience. It can feel more like a public beach than an intimate ceremony location. And depending on the time week or day, it can be very busy.
Another thing couples don’t expect, Black Beach is actually pretty compact.
In photos, it looks expansive and open. But in reality, once there are people on the beach, space fills up quickly. That can make:
It doesn’t mean it won’t work, but it’s something worth knowing beforehand.
This is also something that surprises some people. Black Beach isn’t a natural sand beach. The dark shoreline comes from taconite tailings from the nearby mining operations. That’s what gives it the black color. Some couples actually love this as it makes the location feel unique and different. Others are hoping for a more natural, untouched North Shore vibe. And Black Beach doesn’t fully feel like that.
It truly depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
Even with all of that, I still recommend Black Beach in certain situations.
It’s a great fit if you:
It also works really well as one stop during a multi-location elopement day. For example, couples might start at Black Beach, head to a nearby cliff overlook, explore a forest trail, and end the evening with dinner in Grand Marais.
That’s when it really shines.
I typically suggest other spots if couples want:
There are a lot of lesser-known North Shore locations that offer those things better than Black Beach.
Black Beach is beautiful. There’s absolutely no denying that! But it’s not always the best place to elope, especially if you’re picturing something quiet, private, and secluded.
For the right couple, it’s perfect.
For others, it can feel busy, small, and less intimate than expected.
That’s why I always like helping couples choose a location based on the experience, not just how it looks in photos.
Because the best elopement locations aren’t just beautiful, they actually feel good to be in.
Black Beach can be incredible, but it’s not always the best fit. If you’re planning a North Shore elopement, reach out and I’ll help you find a location that actually matches the experience you’re dreaming about.
