This guide walks you through how to actually elope on the North Shore of Minnesota, without stress, without pressure, and without feeling like you have to recreate something you saw on Instagram. Just a day that feels intentional, meaningful, and completely your own.
If someone had told me ten years ago that I’d be photographing couples exchanging vows above the wild Lake Superior waves, in sandals, sneakers, and sometimes bare feet… I probably would’ve laughed. And now? It’s one of the greatest honors of my life.
The North Shore has a way of slowing everything down. The sound of the waves, the wind coming off the lake, the way the light moves across the rocks, it truly gets into your soul. And if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you already feel that pull.

For some couples, an elopement is just the two of you and your officiant and for others, it’s a small handful of your favorite people there to witness your love. It can look like renting a lakeside Airbnb to celebrate your marriage with a campfire and board games, and it can look like a short hike to a stunning location to say your vows, just the two of you.
An elopement isn’t about rules, it’s about intention. It’s about choosing presence over pressure, and connection over expectation. There is no “right” way to do this. There’s just the way that feels aligned with who you are. Let your imagination run wild!!
If you’re unsure whether what you’re planning is an elopement or a micro-wedding, that’s okay. Most couples figure that out as they go, and I’m always happy to talk it through with you.
Some couples prefer having a small group of their favorite people around, which can be called a micro-wedding. If you’re wanting to learn more about the differences between a micro-wedding and elopement, check out this blog here.

The North Shore stretches from Duluth all the way up to Grand Portage, and every section of it has a completely different feel. That’s part of what makes it so special, and also why choosing the right spot matters.
Here are a few types of locations couples are drawn to when they’re considering eloping on the north shore:
A gentle tip: think about accessibility, not just for guests, but for your attire, footwear, and overall comfort. Some locations require short hikes or uneven terrain, and choosing the right spot can make your day feel easeful instead of stressful. A tip I always recommend is wearing hiking shoes or tennis shoes until you get to the location, and have your wedding shoes (heels, flats, whatever that may look like for you) in your backpack so you can switch!
The logistics matter, but they don’t need to overwhelm you! Here are some considerations to make when deciding to elope on the north shore of Minnesota.
In Minnesota, you can apply for a marriage license at any county office. Once issued, it’s valid for six months, giving you plenty of flexibility with timing. You will also need two witnesses for your ceremony. For a “just us” elopement, this can look like your photographer and officiant as witnesses, for example.
Some state parks require permits for ceremonies, even small ones. Not all locations do, and requirements vary depending on guest count and setup. If you’re considering a state park or public land, I can help guide you toward locations and options that fit your vision.
Light can play a huge role in how your day feels, not just how it photographs. Sunrise offers quiet trails, soft light, and a peaceful start to the day. An hour or so before sunset brings warm tones, dramatic skies, and that golden glow everyone loves.
Waking up early or staying out a little later often means fewer people around and a more intimate experience overall. Many couples love having the rest of the day to adventure, relax, or celebrate afterward.
One of the best parts of eloping on the north shore is letting go of rigid schedules. Your day doesn’t need to be packed to be meaningful.
A North Shore elopement timeline might look like this:
This pacing gives you room to breathe, room to feel your emotions, and to actually be present instead of watching the clock. All of my couples get a custom timeline creation, which helps take the load off of some planning aspects!

The North Shore is beautiful and sometimes unpredictable. Packing thoughtfully makes a big difference!
Bring a backpack with you that has some essentials in case you need it, such as:
As someone who has lived along the shore for about 20 years, I know a thing or two about the weather here. The best advice I can give is to be prepared for it all (depending on season) as Lake Superior runs the weather show around here!
I might be a little biased, but this place can change by the minute. Wind, clouds, light, and weather all move quickly here, and having someone who understands the rhythm of the North Shore makes all the difference.
More than that, you deserve someone who:
