I am going to tell you something about Two Harbors that most people can’t tell you: I grew up there. So when I talk about this town as an elopement location I am not giving you a curated list of things I found on Google. I am telling you about a place that shaped me. And I think that comes through in the way I shoot here.
A Two Harbors elopement sits about thirty minutes north of Duluth right on Lake Superior. It is a small town (genuinely small) but it has so much character packed into it. A slower pace, a classic North Shore feel, and some genuinely beautiful locations that range from iconic lighthouse views to dramatic state park waterfalls to a harbor where massive iron ore ships pull in from the lake.
Here is everything you need to know!
The Two Harbors Lighthouse is iconic and historic and is the oldest operating lighthouse in Minnesota, sitting right on Agate Bay with stunning views of the lake. It is beautiful, it photographs incredibly well, and it has that classic North Shore lighthouse romance that is hard to replicate anywhere else.
Gooseberry Falls State Park is just a few minutes north of town and it is absolutely stunning. Multiple waterfalls, dramatic rocky gorges, beautiful forest, the variety of backdrops you can get in a single session here is remarkable. The light filtering through the trees, the sound of the falls, the drama of the gorge, it creates something genuinely cinematic.
Burlington Bay is right on the lake with a beach area where you can kayak or canoe on Lake Superior in the summer months. It has an open, relaxed feel and beautiful wide lake views without a ton of drama around you.
Grand Superior Lodge is one I have to mention because it is genuinely stunning. It has a beautiful ceremony space, great restaurant on site, right on the lake. If you want a resort experience with everything in one place, Grand Superior is hard to beat.
The Edna G is a special one. The Edna G is a historic tugboat preserved right in the Two Harbors harbor and it is such a cool, unexpected portrait backdrop. I photographed a couple there once for wedding portraits and it was one of the most unique sessions I have ever done. If you love history or maritime vibes, ask about the Edna G.
This is one of my favorite things about Two Harbors and not enough people talk about it. The town has active ore docks and if a ship is coming in you can watch these enormous iron ore boats navigate into a very tight space from the breakwall, close enough that the scale of them genuinely stops you in your tracks. It is slow, dramatic, and completely unlike anything else on the shore. Check the Duluth Shipping News for the schedule and if a boat is coming in on your day, build it into your timeline. You will not regret it.
Two Harbors is well known for agate hunting and it is absolutely worth doing, with one caveat. The easily accessible beaches can be well picked over. But there are some lesser known spots that are harder to get to where you can actually find beautiful agates. Book with me and I will point you in the right direction.
For a town this size the food scene is genuinely impressive.
Betty’s Pies is a North Shore institution and I will not stop recommending it. If you have not had a slice of Betty’s pie you have not truly experienced the North Shore. Non-negotiable. Castle Danger Brewery is great for craft beer lovers. Blackwoods Restaurant and the Rustic Inn are solid sit-down options. For drinks, Harbor Rail and The Tipsy Mosquito are both worth a stop.
Two Harbors has a solid range of options from hotels, lodges, and some really unique Airbnbs. There is actually a brand new dome accommodation right on Lake Superior that just opened. A dome, on the lake. If that is not the most perfect elopement accommodation I do not know what is. And Grand Superior Lodge is a beautiful resort option if you want everything in one place.
Two Harbors is currently planning a significant road construction project through town which could affect traffic and timing depending on when you visit. Worth building extra buffer into your day timeline and checking on the status as your date approaches.
Two Harbors is perfect for the couple who wants a slower, small town feel without sacrificing options. You want good food, variety in where you stay, beautiful and varied locations; but you don’t want the hustle of a bigger city. You want charm, maybe Betty’s Pies after your ceremony, and maybe watch a massive ship pull into the harbor and feel genuinely amazed by it.
If that sounds like you… Two Harbors is waiting.
